Readwise vs Rereader, honestly

One is a venture-scale reading platform with a subscription; the other is a $19 Mac app that does exactly one thing. Which one you should use depends entirely on which features you actually open. Here's the comparison we'd want if we were choosing.

Both products exist for the same insight: highlights you never see again might as well not exist. Both fix it the same way — a daily email of a few old highlights, plus an in-app review. How Kindle highlights get in

Readwise syncs via a browser extension reading Amazon's cloud page, or by emailing your clippings file. Rereader watches the USB port: plug the Kindle in and everything imports automatically — including sideloaded books Amazon's cloud never sees, and it archives every version of My Clippings.txt against Kindle's silent truncation.

Where your data lives

Readwise: their servers, for as long as you subscribe. Rereader: a database on your Mac, forever, exportable to Markdown and JSON with one click. This isn't just philosophy — it's what happens when you stop paying. Cancel Readwise and resurfacing stops; delete Rereader and your data is still sitting in a folder you own.

Scope

Readwise syncs from a hundred-plus sources and ships mobile apps and a read-it-later product. Rereader is Kindle-first and Mac-only, with a Readwise-compatible API for tools like KOReader. Smaller on purpose.
