Do I need my own domain to send the daily email?

Set up the daily email, step by step

Ten minutes, once, and then every morning five of your own Kindle highlights arrive in your inbox. This guide assumes you've never heard of Resend and walks every click. There's also a Gmail/SMTP path if you'd rather not create any new account.

How it works, in one paragraph

Rereader runs on your Mac and sends the email itself — there's no Rereader cloud reading your highlights. To send email, it needs a sender: an email service that accepts "please deliver this message" requests. Resend is the easiest one — free for 100 emails/day (you need one), set up in five minutes. You create an account, copy one key, paste it into Rereader. Done forever.

Part 1 — Create your free Resend account

Go to resend.com and click "Get Started"

Sign up with your normal email address, or the "Continue with Google" button. No credit card is asked for — the free tier is genuinely free.

Verify your email

Resend sends a confirmation link to the address you used. Click it and you land in the Resend dashboard.

Skip the onboarding suggestions

Resend may suggest adding a domain or inviting teammates. You need none of that — close any wizard and head to the left sidebar.

Part 2 — Create an API key

Click "API Keys" in the left sidebar

Then the Create API Key button, top right.

Name it and set permission

Name: rereader (anything works). Permission: Sending access is enough. Click Create.

Copy the key now

Resend shows the key — it starts with re_ — exactly once. Copy it before closing the dialog. (Lost it? No drama: delete the key and create a new one, ten seconds.)

Part 3 — Connect it to Rereader

Open Rereader → Settings → Daily email

Press , from anywhere in the app, or click Settings in the sidebar.

Choose "Resend" and paste your key

The provider toggle defaults to Resend. Paste the re_… key into the key field. Rereader stores it in a private file on your Mac — never in its database, and it never shows the key again.

Enter your address and pick a time

"Send to" is wherever you read email. The default send time is 8:00 — change it to anything; the schedule updates itself when you save.

Send yourself a test

Click Preview to see tomorrow's email without sending, or Send now to fire a real one. If it lands in spam the first time, mark it "not spam" once — subsequent sends learn from it.

The no-new-accounts alternative: Gmail SMTP

If you'd rather use an account you already have, Rereader speaks SMTP to any provider. With Gmail:

Create a Google app password

Go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords (you'll need 2-step verification enabled). Create one named rereader — Google shows a 16-character password.

Switch Rereader to SMTP

In Settings → Daily email, flip the provider toggle to SMTP and enter the URL, replacing the placeholders with your address and that 16-character password (spaces removed):

Same as before — Preview, then Send now.

Good to know

Lid closed at send time? Still arrives. Macs wake briefly on their own all day; Rereader sends at the first wake after your chosen time and retries for six hours. One email a day, never a skipped one.
A failed send costs nothing. Highlights are only marked as seen after a successful send — a failure just means the same five come tomorrow.
No tracking. The email contains no tracking pixels and no links that change anything when clicked.

Troubleshooting

"Send now" says the key is invalid

Almost always a copy-paste that grabbed a trailing space, or a key that was deleted in Resend. Create a fresh key and paste it again — the field accepts a new value any time.

The email never arrives

Check spam first. Then check Resend's dashboard → Emails, which lists every send attempt and its delivery status — if Resend shows "delivered," the problem is a filter on your inbox's side.

I want it from my own domain

Add your domain in Resend (Domains → Add Domain), add the DNS records they list, and set the From address in Rereader's settings to something at that domain. Optional — the default sender works fine.
