Rereader for iPhone
A free companion to the Mac app. Today's set, your whole library and search on your phone; every review you make on the phone counts on the Mac. It syncs through your own iCloud, so there is no account to create and no Rereader server in the middle.
What it does
- Today — how many highlights are ready, your streak, one tap to start.
- Review — one highlight per screen, book and author always visible. Tap Next, or swipe right for more of this and left for less. Same rotation as the Mac: on a given day both devices draw the same set.
- Library and Search — every book and highlight, searchable offline.
What stays on the Mac, on purpose: importing (the Kindle plugs into the Mac), editing notes and tags, and the daily email. The phone is for reading and reviewing.
Set it up
iPhone sync arrived in Rereader 0.2. Download the current DMG from your purchase email (reply to it for a fresh link) and drag it over the old copy. Sync needs macOS 14 or newer; the rest of the app still runs on macOS 12.
System Settings on the Mac, Settings on the iPhone. That is the whole pairing step — there is nothing to type into Rereader.
Free from the App Store: Rereader for iPhone. Open it and wait a minute: the library arrives on its own. The Mac's Settings → iPhone panel shows the same sync status from the other side.
How the sync works
The Mac is the source of truth. A small background service on the Mac copies your library into the private part of your iCloud, and picks up the reviews the phone made. The phone keeps a full local copy, so it works offline and on the subway; changes flow when a connection returns. Your data never touches a server Rereader runs — the only party holding it besides your devices is Apple, under your own iCloud storage.
Reviews are applied on the Mac with the same rules as on the Mac itself. If both devices happen to show you the same highlight on the same day, it counts once.
No Mac yet?
Tap Try with sample highlights on the first screen. A small bundled library lets you explore every screen. The moment a real library arrives from a Mac, the sample rows are cleared.
If it isn't syncing
- Both devices on the same iCloud account? Check the account name at the top of System Settings and iPhone Settings.
- Mac on macOS 14 or newer, and Rereader 0.2 or newer? The Mac's Settings → iPhone panel says so explicitly if not.
- iCloud Drive itself signed in and not paused? The app reports "Sign in to iCloud" or "iCloud is temporarily unavailable" on the first screen when that is the problem.
- Still stuck: on the Mac, Settings → iPhone → Re-upload library, then pull down on the phone's Today screen or reopen the app.
